WHAT IS FEEDBACK?

WHAT IS FEEDBACK?

Feedback is one of the most essential aspects of education, it allows for students to increase their potential and give them an idea of their strengths and areas which could be improved. Feedback can be between teachers and students or it could be between peers, this is known as ‘Peer-assessment’ which means your fellow students asses your work and inform you as to where you could improve. ‘Self-assesment’ is another way of monitoring your work, this is when you asses your own work, usually this is where you will find the most areas to improve because you do not want to be too confident of yourself, however that is why ‘Peer-assesment’ and Teacher assessment is useful because they may find something they love which you would not see. This is known as formative feedback because it is at an early stage of work and helps you with improvements.

WHAT IF WE DO NOT GET FEEDBACK?

We begin to assume everything is fine, however this is where marks begin to get lost because no one is checking the work and pointing out places for improvement, giving you no time to fix theses areas and improve them for further marks. Feedback is very valuable, especially when it is coming from someone who is a role model or knows a lot about the subject, this is because they know what they are talking about and can help you get the best mark possible.

Constructive guidance is also a good way of feedback, this is very similar to what I’ve just spoken about however it offers valid opinions about others work, including both positive and negative feedback, this is done in an honest and friendly way so no one gets offended, this is to improve the final outcome.

Always make sure, if possible, to look at the mark scheme as this will give you more of an idea as to what people will be looking for and how to keep in the mark level you’d like to achieve. For an example…

SUMMATIVE FEEDBACK
Summative feedback is the final result of your work, you will only receive this once all your finished work is handed in, this allows for teachers to mark everything and give you your final outcome, because of the feedback you received throughout the process you have been able to achieve the highest mark you possibly could, as you had time to fix areas and improve the final result in the end.
