PERSPECTIVE DRAWING

WHAT IS PERSPECTIVE DRAWING? Perspective drawing is used to create three dimension within a design, in our sessions with Brian we learnt how to apply this when drawing objects and interiors. Perspective helps create a real sense to the drawing and brings it to life. Artists use it and illustrators very often for visual sketches to allow for accuracy and dimension, as well as depth.

Perspective is to painting what the bridle is to the horse, the rudder to a ship……………..There are three aspects to perspective. The first has to do with how the size of objects seems to diminish according to distance: the second, the manner in which colors change the farther away they are from the eye; the third defines how objects ought to be finished less carefully the farther away they are.

– Leonardo da Vinci

Perspective was first developed in the 15th century by Leon Baptista Alberti (1404-72) and Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). Perspective drawing remained one of the most basic aspects of Western art for 500 years, but then it was challenged by the idea of the Cubists, near the beginning of the 20th century. Knowledge of perspective drawing is an essential tool to have when being a designer as it enhances your drawing technique and end result.

There are two main elements in perspective drawing:

  • LINEAR PERSPECTIVE which deals with the organization of shapes in space.
  • AERIAL PERSPECTIVE which deals with the atmospheric effects on tones and colours.

PERSPECTIVE DRAWING

This image above shows the idea of how perspective works with a horizon line and two vanishing points, each line which makes up the square ends at a vanishing point and it is below the horizon line, this create the idea of it being three dimensional and allows for a more detailed sketch. The same technique is used when drawing any objects/space/architecture.
