MEETING OUR EXPERT- Jane Peach
Tonight gave us the opportunity to meet Jane Peach from SRSB, this allowed us to hear more about the organisation and also gave us the chance to ask her several questions which would help inform our design stage. SRSB provides opportunity, support, friendship and services to the blind and partially sighted and what ever they aspire to be.
The initial brief which we were given before hand explained what sort of themes we should explore and also a few aspects to take into consideration. We need to consider blind and partially sighted peoples experiences of art, but at the same time create something appealing to sighted people. SRSB have worked on several projects within Sheffield Hallam University and are counting on us to provide and display yet another great piece.
ABOUT SRSB
SRSB was formed in 1860, supporting over 3,300 visually impaired people within Sheffield, they offer a wide range of activities and services. They support 300 people in the centre each week and gain 600 new visitors within the year. All their services are free of cost and allow for any age group to join within their community.
Some of the services which they provide are…
- Community Advisory
- Community Support
- Activities Centre
- Social Evenings
- Equipment Centre
- Computer & Technology Support
- Children’s Services
- Health & Beauty Room
- Self Help/ Support Groups
- Sports & Leisure Activities
- Audio books & Talking News
SRSB also work with the community to promote good eyes in order to try and reduce the amount of people who suffer with sight loss. A lot of causes for sight loss are linked to people general health and as a result of having a healthy lifestyle this can reduce your risk of losing your ability to see later in life.
SRSB have had some of their work displayed before in a similar event, in which they created a piece which was inspired by a photograph of boxer Dave Howe. To read more about this particular event, click here.
